What to do in Basel

Located on the Rhine river bordering France and Germany, Basel is a charming Swiss city with a well-preserved medieval Old Town, modern architecture, and a thriving arts and culture scene.

Basel is very walkable and tourist friendly. 1 day is more than enough to explore Basel itself but since it's so well connected, why not extend your trip to explore more of Switzerland or even a bit of France and Germany?

Top Tip: The BaselCard offers free public transport (inclusive of public transport from the airport to your hotel or AirBnB!) and museum discounts.

Here's our narrated guide on some of the best things to do in Basel.

Our one-day walking itinerary in Basel

Here's how we would spend 1 day in Basel:

Day 1

  1. Kickstart your day of discovery at the Spalentor Medieval Gate to experience how a traveller in the medieval times would have entered into the Old Town of Basel.
  2. As you enter the Altstadt, you'll find yourself in Marktplatz, the bustling heart of Basel's Old Town.
  3. Take your time to explore the Old Town aimlessly to get a better sense of the history and culture here.
  4. As you're exploring the Old Town, I'm sure you'll stumble upon the striking red city hall or the Rathaus, where politics and art converge.
  5. After the Old Town, why not take a gentle stroll along the Rhine River?
  6. This might be a good place to break for lunch before visiting the Kunstmuseum, one of Switzerland's finest art institutions. For more museum suggestions, see museums below.
  7. If you still have energy left, why not conclude the day with a visit to the Kulturkirche Paulus?

As you can see, 1 day is more than enough to explore Basel itself but since it's so well connected, why not cycle into St. Louis (France) or take the tram into Weil am Rhein (Germany) or jump on a train to visit another town or city in Switzerland?
